The Dragon’s Drumbeat Returns to Legoland
There’s a moment we’ve come to recognize at LEGOLAND California Resort. Families are moving from ride to ride, kids already onto the next thing. Then a low drumbeat cuts through the air. Just one note. Enough to make people pause.
Then it builds.
And little by little, the space in front of us fills.
We were invited back again this year as the Dragon’s Drumbeat during NINJAGO Weekends (January 17, 18, 19, 24), performing inside NINJAGO World where everything already feels bright, kinetic, and full of motion. Legoland has been inviting taiko groups to perform ever since they added the park attraction in 2016. Starting 2026 by stepping into that space, surrounded by life sized ninja-themed lego structures, it feels like joining a story already in progress.
So we leaned into that.
Our set carried strong, grounded rhythms layered with higher flute melodies. Sounds that naturally fit the stylized, Asian-inspired world of NINJAGO. In front of the ninja training grounds, the energy met us immediately.
And then the crowd became part of it.
Kids are usually first. Some run right up, drawn in without hesitation. Others watch from a distance, then slowly inch closer. You start to see them mirror the movements. Small at first, then more confident, bouncing with the rhythm. We all remembered one girl in the front row swinging her foam ninja sword along to our syncronized movements in the song Hana Shou Bu.
Parents follow the rhythms in their own way. A smile. A nod. Then clapping along once the groove settles in.
It’s subtle, but you can feel when everything locks in, when it shifts from performance to shared experience.
That’s the part we look forward to each time we return.
The weather gave us everything we needed: clear skies, bright sun, and energy that carried through every set. The drums reached far across the park, and the shinobue fue from songs like Haruka, Nami No Mai, and Hanabi Matsuri cut cleanly through the air, pulling people in before they even knew what they were hearing.
By the end of each performance, the space felt different.
Fuller. More connected. Alive in a way it wasn’t just minutes before.
We’re grateful to keep coming back, not just to perform, but to be part of something families experience together. For some, it’s a surprise discovery. For others, it’s something they return to each year.
And for us, it’s another chance to share what we love in a space built on curiosity and play.
If you find yourself at LEGOLAND California Resort during NINJAGO Weekends, come find us.
And if it sparks something, come see us again, or step into the dojo and try taiko for yourself. If you’re interested in La Jolla Taiko performing for your event, let us know!
